Acceptable Use Policy

Effective June 6, 2026 · Last updated June 6, 2026

This Acceptable Use Policy (“AUP”) governs your use of Facet and is part of our Terms of Service. Facet is a tool for establishing the provenance of media you own or are authorized to distribute — not a tool for monitoring people.

1. Media you upload — ownership and rights

By accessing or using Facet, you represent, warrant, and acknowledge that every item of media you upload to, register with, or distribute through the platform is either:

  • owned by you; or
  • free to use — for example, licensed under a Creative Commons license, in the public domain, or otherwise lawfully cleared for your intended use.

You will not upload, register, or distribute any media that is owned by another person or entity and that you are not authorized to use. You are solely responsible for ensuring you hold every right and permission necessary for your media and your use of the Service. Any media uploaded or distributed in violation of this section is subject to removal, and the violation may result in the suspension or permanent ban of your account, as described in Enforcement below.

2. Your other responsibilities

  • Lawful basis for attribution. You must have a valid lawful basis to associate a recipient with a copy and to identify that recipient later, and you must provide any notices and obtain any consents that applicable law requires.
  • Compliance. Your use must comply with all applicable laws, including intellectual-property, privacy, and data-protection laws.

3. Prohibited uses

You may not use Facet to:

  • upload, register, or distribute media you do not own or are not authorized to use, or that infringes the intellectual property or other rights of any person or entity;
  • conduct unlawful surveillance, stalking, tracking, or monitoring of any person, or to harass, threaten, intimidate, dox, or harm anyone;
  • process personal data without a lawful basis, or in a way that violates the rights of any person;
  • upload, register, or distribute any illegal or unlawful media or content of any kind — including child sexual abuse material (CSAM); content that facilitates violence, terrorism, or other serious crime; or content that is defamatory or otherwise unlawful;
  • identify or attribute media in order to retaliate against, discriminate against, or endanger an individual (for example, a source, whistleblower, or journalist);
  • reverse-engineer, circumvent, probe, or attempt to extract the keying of the embedding or detection engine, or defeat its security;
  • resell, sublicense, or provide the Service to third parties except as permitted in writing;
  • disrupt or overload the Service, attempt unauthorized access, or upload malware; or
  • misrepresent an evidence report or attribution result.

4. Provenance, not surveillance

Facet exists to recover the provenance of your own distributed media — to answer “which copy is this, and which issuance did it come from.” It is not a general-purpose people-tracking or surveillance system, and you may not use it as one.

5. Enforcement — suspensions and bans

We may investigate suspected violations at any time. We may remove or disable any media or content that violates this AUP, and we may suspend or permanently ban your account — with or without notice — for any abuse of the platform or any violation of this AUP or the Terms of Service. Uploading or distributing media owned by someone else, or other serious or repeated violations, may result in an immediate and permanent ban. Where content is illegal (for example, child sexual abuse material or content facilitating serious crime), we will remove it and may report it — together with relevant account and upload information — to law enforcement and other authorities, comply with any mandatory reporting obligations, and cooperate with investigations and lawful requests. We may also refuse service and — where we become aware that content infringes someone’s rights — notify and share relevant information with the affected copyright owner or rights holder. We may disclose information about an account or its content in response to a valid legal request or to establish, exercise, or defend legal claims. These remedies are in addition to any others available to us at law.

6. Copyright complaints

If you believe content on Facet infringes your copyright, send a notice to [COPYRIGHT / DMCA AGENT EMAIL] that identifies the work and the allegedly infringing material, your contact details, a statement of good-faith belief that the use is unauthorized, a statement (under penalty of perjury, where applicable) that your notice is accurate and that you are authorized to act, and your signature. We respond to valid notices, may remove or disable the material and notify the user, and terminate repeat infringers. [DESIGNATED AGENT DETAILS (DMCA)].

7. Reporting abuse

To report misuse of the Service or content concerns, contact [ABUSE / CONTACT EMAIL].
